We are now only a few short weeks away from learning the result of the Labour Leadership contest - whereas once the generic and uninspiring Andy Burnham seemed destined to emerge triumphant it is now just as likely that far left wing firebrand Jeremy Corbyn will be the Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition on 13th September.
Sir Paul Beresford has welcomed the publication of an extensive report which considers just how much each of the four possible Labour leaders have committed to in terms of uncosted and unfunded public spending. The full document is available to read here and shows quite clearly that Labour and its leaders have learned nothing from their decisive rejection by the electorate in May.
The headline figures are that Andy Burnham has committed to £24.4 billion of unfunded spending, Yvette Cooper £24.0 billion, Liz Kendall £17.7 billion and Jeremy Corbyn £42.0 billion. Sir Paul commented that 'regardless of which of these candidates is elected next month, they each represent, though perhaps to different degrees, the shocking recklessness and lack of understanding which so characterises the modern Labour Party's approach to financial affairs. The British people have sacrificed and strived a great deal over the last few years to restore a sense of financial security to the nation - should any of these four candidates ever assume the highest office in the land these sacrifices will all become in vain - we cannot and will not let that happen.'
